Children need between 9 and 11 hours of sleep every night. The right kids mattress doesn’t just affect how well your child sleeps — it plays a direct role in spinal development, immune health, and long-term wellbeing. With so many options on the market, how do Australian parents make the right choice? Here are 7 essential things to look for when choosing a kids mattress.
1. Safety First — Choose a Non-Toxic Kids Mattress
Calmora® Kids Mattress
When it comes to kids mattresses, material safety should always be your first priority. Children’s immune systems are still developing, and prolonged exposure to mattresses containing formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), or heavy metals can pose serious health risks.
Look for products backed by internationally recognised certifications such as CertiPUR, SGS, or TÜV Rheinland. These certifications confirm that the mattress is free from harmful chemicals and meets strict quality standards. Plant-based bio-foam — made from natural materials like soybean and castor oil — has become a leading eco-friendly choice, delivering excellent safety credentials alongside environmental benefits.
2. Medium-Firm Support — Avoid Mattresses That Are Too Soft
Medium-Firm Support
Many parents assume a softer mattress means more comfort, but for growing children, an overly soft surface can actually do harm. A mattress that’s too soft fails to support the spine properly, which can lead to back pain and affect healthy spinal development over time.
The best kids mattresses offer medium-firm support — firm enough to keep the spine in its natural S-curve during sleep, while still feeling comfortable. When your child tries the mattress, check that the lower back is properly supported and that the body isn’t sinking in too deeply.
3. Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Dust Mite Protection
Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Dust Mite Shield
Australia’s warm and humid climate makes mattresses a prime breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria — and children with sensitive skin or allergies are especially vulnerable. Choosing a kids mattress with natural anti-bacterial and anti-dust mite properties can significantly reduce allergens and lower the risk of eczema, rhinitis, and other allergy-related conditions.
Plant-based foam naturally resists bacteria and mould, and a removable, machine-washable cover makes day-to-day maintenance effortless — so your child sleeps in a clean, hygienic environment every single night.
4. Breathability Matters — Especially in the Australian Climate
Australian summers are hot, and children run warm during sleep. A kids mattress with poor airflow traps heat and moisture, disrupting sleep quality and encouraging bacterial growth.
Look for a mattress with a high open-cell foam structure or purpose-built breathable design that allows heat and moisture to escape naturally. This keeps your child cool and dry throughout the night for deeper, more restful sleep — even on warm summer nights.
5. Choose a Size That Grows with Your Child
Kids grow fast, so it pays to think ahead when choosing a mattress size. Rather than buying for your child’s current height, factor in their likely adult height and allow an extra 20–30 cm of length.
In Australia, the standard Single (approx. 92 × 188 cm) is the most common kids mattress size, while a King Single (approx. 107 × 203 cm) is better suited to taller children or teenagers and offers better long-term value. Make sure the width also suits your bedroom layout, leaving enough clear space around the bed for safe movement.
6. Pair Your Kids Mattress with the Right Bed Frame
A good bed frame enhances mattress support and maintains airflow underneath, helping to prevent moisture and mould build-up. For bunk beds and trundle beds especially, mattress thickness becomes a critical safety issue — not just a comfort preference.
Under Australia’s mandatory safety standard AS/NZS 4220:2010, the vertical clearance between the top of the guardrail and the top surface of the mattress base must be at least 260 mm. The ACCC further recommends a clearance of 360 mm for greater fall protection. The thicker the mattress, the lower the effective guardrail height — which is exactly why a slim-profile kids mattress is essential for the top bunk.
Red Nose Australia also recommends that children under 9 should not sleep on the top bunk, as younger children face a significantly higher risk of falls and night-time climbing accidents.
The Calmora® Bio-based Memory Foam Mattress is purpose-built for this — its 10 cm slim profile helps maintain the guardrail clearance required under AS/NZS 4220:2010, giving parents genuine peace of mind.
7. Let Your Child Try It — With You Watching
Every child has a different body shape and sleep style, so it’s worth letting your child lie down on the mattress before you buy. Watch whether their body is well-supported, whether they can turn over comfortably, and whether the spine looks level from the side. If the lower back is sinking in, the mattress may be too soft — if the child seems uncomfortable on their side, it may be too firm.
Don’t Forget the Pillow and Mattress Protector
Once you’ve found the right kids mattress, two accessories are essential:
- Pillow — Children’s pillows shouldn’t be too high. The height should match your child’s shoulder width, keeping the head, neck, and spine in a straight, natural line to support healthy development.
- Mattress Protector — A waterproof, breathable mattress protector shields the mattress from sweat and stains, makes cleaning far easier, and significantly extends the life of your investment.
